Having Bouts of Depression? Try Adding Omega 3 to Your Diet

Are you suffering from depression? Not due to the drop in the stock market indices or some other trivial problem, I am talking about the type of depression that leads to unstable behaviour, mood swings, and other serious results.

It has been found that our western diet could possibly be contributing to these bouts of depression. We consume too much of omega 6 and very less of omega 3. Did you know that in countries such as Japan and Iceland they have very few cases of depression? The difference is, that their diet contains more of fish as compared to the westerners. In Japan the people eat about 147 pounds of fish a year and in Iceland they eat about 225 pounds. I know that is far more fish than I could eat. Could our high intake of the omega 6 fatty acids and a very low intake of omega 3 fatty acids be contributing to our depression?

Blood tests were performed on the people showing signs of depression. It was discovered that people with a higher content of omega 6 in their blood as compared to omega 3 appeared to be experiencing more depression. It is also a fact that people suffering from depression tend to be careless about eating balanced diet resulting in even lower amount of omega 3. Studies have shown good results when omega 3 has been added to their diet. Participants who added it to their diet showed less mood swings and stress. The end result, their depression eases.

You don't need to take an overdose to get these results. Taking as little as 1 to 2 grams a day of omega 3 by supplements is quite sufficient. You can also get your omega 3 by eating fish twice a week. It should be cold water fish and the best amongst them is salmon. If you are pregnant or worried about the possible mercury content or other toxins in fish, then you can take supplements. Flax seeds and fish oil are the two very good options for the supplements that you can take. Both of them can be found at your pharmacy or in a health food store.

Don't take depression lightly. It's a very serious problem. We are not saying that proper amounts of omega 3 in your diet will cure it. You should still be under a doctor's care and taking medicines they have prescribed to you. Adding omega 3 as an additional preventive measure will help these medicines work better.

An individual is said to be suffering from dysthymia when the above mentioned symptoms persist for over two years.

3. Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder (Also Manic Depressive Disorder) - Bipolar depression also has a lot of the low mood and energy symptoms like those of major depression. The only difference is that apart from patients experiencing bouts of depression they also undergo durations of exceptionally high mood, energy and activity levels.

4. Post-Partum Depression - Post-partum depression ordinarily affects parents who have just received a child. Signs of this ailment include intense and prolonged feeling of desolation, hopelessness, incessant tiredness and so on. On the other hand these symptoms are not experienced in the same way between different patients, for some patients it may last longer or be more intense than in others.

5. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - This is a type of depression that affects certain people during certain periods or seasons in the year. Signs of SAD include lousy mood, constant exhaustion, sleep and eating habit changes. This tends to happen mostly during the beginning of winter. Symptoms of this type of depression tends to fade off once the season ends.

6. Reactive Depression (Or Situational Depression) - This usually happens when a person experiences low mood after undergoing a difficult or unpleasant experience. Examples of such disturbing experiences include financial difficulties, death of a loved one and natural disasters. Persons who are affected with this type of depression are more capable of recovering quickly from the condition even without treatment as compared to other types of depression.

Less common types of depression include; Melancholic Depression, Psychotic Depression, Catatonic Depression and Atypical Depression. The types and severity of the symptoms for each of these forms of depression vary from patient to patient and are not easy to diagnose. How to Identify Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome, more commonly known as CFS, is a complex disorder that is characterized by long-term fatigue that is not relieved by rest. It is usually worsened by physical or even mental activity. CFS can significantly lower a person's level of activity, affecting even their activities of daily living. A lot people with CFS have difficulty securing jobs or even with just taking care of themselves. Even if the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are still unidentified, there is a lot we can do for people who suffer from this condition.

Many diseases have fatigue as one of its symptoms which can make identifying chronic fatigue syndrome difficult. However, it is not impossible. If you or someone you know meets the two criteria below, see your physician immediately so you can get medical care. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the criteria for diagnosing the disorder are:

1. Severe or intense fatigue that lasts for more than 6 months, is not relieved or improved by rest and is not caused by any psychiatric or medical condition as excluded by clinical diagnosis; and

2. Simultaneously have at least four of the following: frequent or recurring sore throat, muscle pain, multi-joint pain that doesn't have redness or swelling, tender lymph nodes on the axilla or cervical collar, headaches that are you have not had before in terms of pattern, type or severity, sleep that does not refresh or reenergize you, post-extertional malaise (exhaustion and sickness that follows mental or physical activity) that lasts for at least 24 hours, and impaired concentration or memory.

In order for a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome to be made, the above symptoms should have occurred for more than six months, but should not occur before the onset of the chronic fatigue. Even if you do not meet the criteria, but still suffer from chronic fatigue, it is still suggested that you go see a doctor. As mentioned, there are several diseases that could cause this fatigue.

There are other symptoms of CFS as well. While they may not contribute to the diagnosis, they are still very troublesome and deserve medical care. These symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal pain, chronic cough, alcohol intolerance, bloating, earache, jaw pain, dry eyes, dry mouth, nausea, morning stiffness, alcohol intolerance, night swears, irritability, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, tingling sensations and weight loss.

If you know someone that has CFS, now is the time to show him support and help him out any way you can. Even cooking, doing a few errands, helping out with house chores or helping them relax can be very helpful. Even the simplest acts do matter.

There is still no cure for chronic fatigue syndrome, and its management require that the patient should be monitored frequently by health care professionals. An individualized treatment program is needed because the condition can have varying symptoms. Both traditional and alternative therapies that target the symptoms, coping techniques and activity management can be used. There are several treatment options that can be explored, but remember that the relief of symptoms is always the primary goal.

The unconditional love and companionship that pets often provide, however, often gives depressed individuals a beneficial and positive focus. While more risky, certain surgical procedures such as brain implants and treatments including vagus nerve and skull stimulation may be indicated for patients with depression levels that are particularly resistant to other forms of treatment. Perhaps the best way to ensure good mental health is to stay connected to the positive influences around you, as a lack of social support is a major component of depression. How An Exercise Routine Works Naturally To Offset Depression

Depression is a widespread illness that affects tens of millions of people worldwide. The severity can range from apathy or mild sadness to suicidal thoughts, but any form of depression severely reduces the sufferer's quality of life. There are a variety of treatments available for depression, including antidepressant drugs, psychiatry and hospitalization for severe cases. However, one of the simplest and most effective is developing a fitness and exercise routine.

It has long been known that exercise has many positive health benefits, and that physical health is tied closely to mental health. A poor diet has been shown to lead to depression and an inability to focus, for example. However, the importance of exercise in treating depression goes beyond that. Even mild exercise produces endorphins, which are chemicals that produce an analgesic, or pain-reducing, effect.

Since depression is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as aches and fatigue, this alone is a helpful treatment. However, there are some problems with exercise as a treatment. The biggest one is that a major symptom of depression is a lack of motivation, so it can be very difficult for patients to make themselves exercise. Another problem is that not all forms of exercise have equal benefits, and whatever exercise is done must be fairly strenuous. A nice stroll around the block is better than sitting at home of course, but as an actual treatment the body must be pushed in order to produce those beneficial endorphins and hormonal releases.

The optimal type of exercise to help with depression is something that's called burst training. This is where you do a group of exercises with short bursts of all out effort, followed by brief recovery periods. The "surges" or "bursts" with these exercise routines help to stimulate the central nervous system and adrenal glands.

It can be difficult for the average person to develop a suitable fitness routine on their own, especially when suffering from feelings of apathy or anxiety that often accompany depression. Additional health problems may also make this difficult.

Both of these problems can be worked around by hiring a certified personal trainer. A good personal trainer will be aware of the patient's limitations and help them develop an exercise routine that works around those while still achieving maximum fitness levels.

In addition, a personal trainer will motivate the patient and monitor their exercise. This process still depends on the patient following instructions and sticking to the routine, but that is true of all depression treatments. The additional motivation given by the trainer can help hold the patient accountable.

In this short article I want to talk about depression and the role it might play in anxiety. Maybe you are beginning to experience excessive anxiety and can't quite put your hand on what might have caused it.

A look at depression
Depression is best described as feeling sad, unhappy or just down in the dumps. Nothing major there. Almost everyone feels this way at one stage or another for short periods of time.

However, true clinically diagnosed depression is a mood disorder in which the feelings I described above are experienced, but much more intense. Interfering with everyday life for days, weeks and sometimes longer

Some of the main contributing factors to depression can be:
• Sleeping problems
• Certain medications, e.g. Steroids
• Alcohol or drug abuse
• Medical conditions, e.g. Cancer
• Stressful life events, e.g. Divorce, job loss, childhood abuse or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend

Can depression be related to anxiety?
Absolutely. Although no one knows exactly why depression and anxiety are linked, a recent study showed 85% of those with major depression were also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder while 35% had symptoms of a panic disorder. Anxiety and depression are known as the fraternal twins of mood disorders, because they so often go hand in hand.

As you can see, while anxiety and depression are two separate disorders, they are linked incredibly closely. It's a case of cause and effect. In this case the depression is the cause and anxiety is the effect. Two separate 'things' (disorders) but one acting as a stepping stone for the next.

Think of it as a well paying job and financial freedom. These are two separate 'things' but you can't have the effect (financial freedom) without the cause (a well paying job). For those who like analogies!

How to Recognise/Symptoms
Nearly everybody has an idea as to what depression is. In a nutshell, we all know it's when someone feels down or sad. But are we aware that people who have depression will usually see everything with a more negative attitude than others and are unable to imagine that any problem or situation can be solved in a positive way? What exactly are the main symptoms of clinical depression?

Below I have listed some of the main symptoms:
• Becoming withdrawn or isolated
• Finding it very difficult to concentrate
• Thought of death or suicide
• Trouble sleeping OR excessive sleeping
• Dramatic change in appetite, often with weight gain or loss
• Feelings of worthlessness, self hate and guilt
• Restlessness and irritability
• Sudden loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed

NOTE: Depression can often appear as anger and discouragement, rather than feelings of sadness, as you might expect

Best ways to prevent depression
Depression is one of the most highly treatable medical conditions that there are. Some forms of depression may not be preventable due to it being triggered by a chemical malfunction in the brain. However, research confirms that depression may be alleviated, or sometimes prevented, with good health habits. As the saying goes, 'prevention is better than cure'.

Yes, you have probably heard this over and over before but to best prevent a depressed mood a proper diet and frequent exercise are essential. It's also important to take time out from work and your everyday life to relax and have fun, do what you really enjoy! Now you might be saying, 'I've heard all this before'. Well, have you tried it, have you stuck with it?! The fact that your reading this indicates to me that you haven't.

Medicare Hopes to Increase Coverage for Depression

Depression is a very real issue for seniors (and other Americans) all over the country. However, in many seniors the disease has gone undetected, because even with Medicare, preventative measures were not covered for mental health needs. How Do You Fix a Depression Cold?

You know what a cold feels like physically, but can you have a similar condition without the physical attributes? My definition of a "Depression Cold" is just feeling down, out of sorts, and maybe even a little miserable, but worst of all, it hangs around and doesn't seem to go away. Some people will never admit to having low times, others will never stop whining about it, and yet others, like you and me, are aware and want to fix it quickly. There are the usual band aid solutions such as food, alcohol and drugs, but also pleasant and effective natural remedies, that will actually re-balance your body.

Most people who have a pain condition will attend to it, to relieve their discomfort. If you are not feeling in peak performance, this is also a normal condition, that needs attending. Why not respect your body and treat it as special, as an Olympic athlete would, or simply as a temple of beauty and perfection? If you are in perfect health, you will feel good, and if you feel good, you will look beautiful. So look at your condition of imbalance as a temporary one, that you can easily fix, and that it is a matter of priority.

Firstly, the chicken or egg, which comes first story. If you are feeling down, this will decrease your white blood cell count, and hence weaken your immune system. So unless further diagnosis confirms you have chronic depression illness, you may only be offered vitamins, pills, or whatever. This may help and satisfy some people, but many just don't want to take the time or trouble to get medical advice, for something that may seem trivial. If our body is giving us a few little clues that we are out of balance, we should take the hint and attend to it sooner, rather than later. A car that has low air pressure in the tyres, will give some clues such as poor steering. If you never check the air pressure, and just keep going, you can not blame anyone but yourself, for any future mishaps. Even aircraft have a physical tyre check, as one of many pre take off checks. The most precious thing in our life is our body, so why not care for and treat it with the respect it deserves? It is not up to a doctor or anyone else, but our responsibility and priority, to observe and ensure ongoing checks and maintenance, before serious problems develop.

It is a worthwhile habit to develop reading and listening to your own body. It is not wrong to admit having a depression cold, so to speak. Sometimes simple remedies such as vitamins, diet choice, and exercise may help, but there are so many to choose from. This is probably the most difficult factor, not knowing what action to immediately take. Worse still, is the possibility that it may be just a waste of time and money, if it doesn't help. Assuming that you have already been to a g.p. or have decided not to, you are now faced with what to do yourself. Now where is that magic potion? Here it is, it is called medicinal plant oils, or essential oils.

Essential oils are very concentrated oils extracted from the steam during boiling and distillation of the roots, leaves or flowers of the plant. One special feature of these oils is that they are like the life blood of plants. They protect the plant from all toxins and pathogens, and so have similar properties and effects on us humans as well. This helps our body and immune system to regain health and balance, especially when antibiotics are not effective. Essential oils also have equally powerful emotional properties, and so have the dual benefit of helping to balance our health physically and emotionally.

They have been effectively used for centuries, so there is no further proof really needed as to their efficacy. In early days they were only available and affordable to the rich or famous. Now, of course, they are readily available. Ongoing scientific tests continue, mainly to verify medical and physical properties and applications.

I will mention three oils that have profound healing and rejuvenation properties. I have used them with a broad range of clients, from young children, depressed mothers, and even drug addicts. The first essential oil is called Alpinia Zerumbet, which comes from a rare ginger plant in the Amazon jungle. It has very powerful calming and rejuvenation properties, used locally in the Amazon for hysteria and emotional disturbance. University tests claim it is almost as strong as heroin, without actually acting on opiod receptors, and being non reversible to neutralising tests. The second oil, especially if there is difficulty with getting supplies of Alpinia, is Benzoin essential oil, which is even more deeply calming. It is very fragrant and easy to rub in a few drops any where you desire, to give you an immediate emotional lift. There are no side effects such as from alcohol or drugs, but just a deep, neutralising calmness. There is a third unusual, but powerful oil, that was rubbed on to Jesus by Mary Magdalene, at the last supper. It is called Spikenard. So for the curious or experimental types, this oil is also deeply calming and emotion releasing, at a more spiritual level.

You now have three possible essential plant oils to choose from, to help relieve your depression cold. I have selected these as being the most powerful and effective, despite them not often mentioned in aromatherapy textbooks. Keep a small bottle of one of them in your first aid kit, or handbag. Just a few drops on the inside of your wrist might be all you need to help regain your emotional balance.

Relieve Depression, Create Joy

We can create joy within our own hearts when we know how! There is no need to be depressed when that depression is caused by thoughts we choose to dwell on.

Our thoughts are powerful! It has been said that what we think is who we are. There is so much truth in that statement.

If we allow our thoughts to remain focused on our dislike of someone for instance, then we are creating a negative energy that grows within our hearts and emits from our physical body. Apparently, according to the Law of the Universe, this will also cause negative energy to be drawn into our proximity. It will create darkness within our hearts which may develop into depression as it evolves.

We can change our own environment--our world. When we are aware that negative thoughts are entering into our mind, we can choose to bring positive thoughts into our mind instead. We can do this but we must make the actual decision to do so, and then act on it. If we blindly choose to act on any thought that randomly enters into our mind, then we are likely going to exist in a darker and darker place. This certainly may cause depression.

We can choose to do other things also to help relieve depression. We can think about helping someone. There is so much need for physical and spiritual uplifting in our world that it is not very hard to find someone we can help in some way. Even a smile or sending some kind of positive energy to someone helps uplift our own spirits as well as theirs, and the more love and positive energy we can bring into our own hearts, the less depression, or darkness, will remain. We can change our atmosphere from an aura of "Hell" into an aura of "Heaven".

One way we can create joy in our hearts is through the act of giving. Once when Cherokee elder John Red Hat and I were traveling from New Mexico east, I realized that I had lost my feeling of joy, and I wanted it back. Creator "heard my thoughts" and helped me. I saw an exit to a rest area. I decided to pull off and take my dog, Chewy, for a walk. While I was opening the back of the truck to let Chewy out, I saw a man digging in a trash bin. I felt badly for him. A little while later I glanced up and saw him at the next trash bin to my left and he was digging in that one. Again I felt compassion for him. A little while later as I was putting my dog back into the back of the truck, I saw the same man sitting at another picnic area chewing on a head of lettuce.

I felt a strong desire to help the man. So, I looked at the food I had in the truck and found an unopened package of oatmeal raisin cookies and thought that at least that would give him some cereal and fruit. Then I took what money I had in my purse and brought these items to the man. As I approached I told him, "I hope this will help you a little on your journey."

The man had a round, happy face and beautiful, blue eyes. He accepted my gift, smiled and said, "God bless you."

As I climbed back into my truck, I realized I had my joy back and I smiled. I realized my Father had not just given me back my joy, but had allowed me to earn it. I was bubbling over with joy and happiness!

It may be possible for us to change our environment from one of depression to one of joy if we choose to do so.

: Can depression be genetic? I find the articles of most interest to be those that seem to be making a lot of progress in the study of genetics and mental illness including a genetic link to ADHD. Even though these studies are in the very early stages, they shed some new light on mental illness and "maybe" some promise of a break through down the road. is in the forefront of many studies today. Can depression be genetic or is depression genetically inherited are questions that are often asked of me. Is there a suicide gene? Certain studies have claimed to isolate parts of the brain and genes that may be responsible for depression; and other articles claim that the environment can alter the genes which would give someone a predisposition to depression or other mental illnesses. Still other research has claimed that toxins or deficiencies or a plethora of vitamins in early development can also lead to mental illness.

To say that the cause of an illness of any sort is genetic is somewhat of a vacuous answer. We can then ask what was the cause of the illness in the ancestor that passed this gene along; and on and on we go. Somewhere in the family of origin, somebody had to be the "prime cause" or "first cause" that introduced this illness to the family gene pool. Now the question of whether the prime cause was a gene mutation or environmental issue cannot be avoided. This also entails another issue viz. if mental illness is initially introduced to a particular gene pool by means other than DNA, then of logical necessity-mental illness can still be caused by factors other than DNA. The question then becomes, what are some of the possible causes of mental illness, are they biological, genetic mutations, environmental stressors, toxins...

Some scientists have claimed to have isolated a certain area in the brain that is responsible for pleasure and that genetic therapy might be able to repair or change the brain function by adding a missing brain protein p11 to that specific area of the brain.

Other studies claim that fetal stress or traumatic events can cause the genes to "turn on or off". Small chemical groups can cause protein complexes to bind to histones and these can control gene activity. The researchers have studied in detail a complex called PRC2 which can attach small chemical groups - methyl groups - to the histones. Protective complexes can bind to the histones when this marker is present and the genes are turned off. Their new results show that the protective complexes are lost and selected genes turned on when cells are exposed to external stress factors.

Recent studies seem to have found a biomarker or genetic mutation that influences how the brain responds to stress which plays a key role in depression. The study claims to have found a genetic mutation that precludes certain individuals from producing enough neuropeptide Y. When the brain produces an insufficient amount of this NPY they are prone to have more intense negative emotional responses when subjected to stressful situations. The interesting aspect of these findings is that they could possibly lead to genetic engineering and actually provide a "cure" for mental illness in the future. is part of a larger body of genetics studying mental illness which almost always leads us to more discoveries and maybe treatments. Currently we can treat the symptoms but seldom "cure" the illness unless the cause is a hormonal imbalance or if the symptoms are that of another illness that is treatable, such as some infectious diseases.

How to Diagnose Depression

Depression is a medical condition. It is not just on one's mind. It is not an imaginary illness. It is a real disorder that requires diagnosis. Hence, a person who suspects himself or herself of being depressed must undergo a depression test to confirm the existence of the said disorder. Eventually, depression is like any other illness that demands treatment.

Medical practitioners and mental health experts usually conduct several depression tests to diagnose whether a patient is suffering from depression or is merely experiencing other medical diseases that manifest symptoms similar to that of depression. Physical, laboratory and other examinations are included during a patient's evaluation aside from the depression test. However, the primary tool to diagnose depression is through the symptoms experienced by the affected person.

Mental health professionals generally devise an assessment tool for depression. This tool is consists of questions that pertain to the symptoms of depression. It attempts to elicit what symptoms are experienced by the person seeking for mental health assistance. A person who manifests or experiences five or more of the symptoms for two weeks or longer is considered depressed. The following symptoms of depression are included in the tool used for depression test:

1. Loss of appetite that results to weight loss
2. Over eating that results to weight gain
3. Insomnia or difficult of sleeping during sleeping hours
4. Hypersomnia or oversleeping during waking hours
5. Feeling of worthlessness
6. Feeling of helplessness
7. Feeling of hopelessness
8. Feeling of too much guilt
9. Lack of energy or always feeling tired
10. Loses interest on previously enjoyed activities
11. Problem on concentration or focus
12. Difficulty of making decisions or remembering trivial details
13. Frequent suicidal thoughts
14. Restless, aggressive or irritable

The abovementioned symptoms are to be evaluated during the depression test. However, other medical conditions must be ruled out first through other diagnostic examinations.

The other tests conducted to ensure that the patient is not suffering from other diseases include blood tests, CT scan or MRI, electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram. The blood tests are done to verify that the symptoms manifested by the patient are not caused by anemia or thyroid hormone imbalance. Another component of the depression tests are radiology examinations such as CT scan and MRI. These are used to confirm presence of brain tumor. Furthermore, electrocardiogram is used to test existence of any cardiac condition that might have caused the symptoms or the depressive disorder itself. Lastly, electroencephalogram is utilized to assess variation or abnormalities in the brain activity of the affected person. All of these diagnostic examinations are done together with the depression test. But then again, these examinations are intended for ruling out other medical conditions, not exactly to diagnose depression per se.

Indeed, depression is a serious illness. It can cause functional and social disabilities to the affected person. In fact, it is one of the most common causes of death these days. Therefore, as early as possible, a person suspected for depression must submit himself/herself for depression test and treatment. Depression test is a reliable examination to diagnose depression. However, the result of a depression test must be analyzed by a medical or mental health expert to ensure that the diagnosis is accurate.

Top 8 Behavioral Methods for Managing Depression

Do you want to avoid using psychotropic medications to address your symptoms of depression? Here are some behavioral methods you can use to combat the symptoms.
Exercise daily - The best thing you can do to behaviorally manage symptoms of depression is exercise 20 minutes every day. Exercise releases endorphins in your brain that fight depressed mood. It does not have to be a rigorous workout. You just need to get your heart rate up. That can be accomplished by walking briskly, jogging, etc. You can start off slow (always check with your physician before beginning an exercise program) and work your way up to the 20 minutes.
Diet - Eating healthy is important too. Many people over or under eat when they feel depressed. Either way, it is not good for you. Our bodies need food to keep energy levels up. Remembering the importance of good nutrition is key to managing symptoms of depression. If you are unsure what types of food are good for you, make an appointment with a nutritionist or dietician.
Sleep well - Sleeping too much or not enough can increase symptoms of depression. If you are experiencing insomnia, try some relaxation exercises to help you get to sleep. If you are sleeping more than 8 hours a day, you are getting too much rest. Instead of staying in bed, get up and attempt to stay as close to your normal routine as possible. If you need to sleep during the day, limit yourself to a nap of one hour or less.
Mediation - Meditation is an extremely healthy way to turn off your thinking and allow your body to heal and grow. If you are experiencing negative thoughts, this technique can give you a reprieve.
Thought Stopping - Turn those negative thoughts off! Every time you catch yourself thinking negatively, tell yourself to stop. Then, see if you can challenge yourself to think more realistically about the situation.
Don't Isolate - One of the worst things you can do is shut down and stay away from your supports. Utilize those people that you are connected to. Talk to them daily to remind yourself that you have people in your life that care.
Keep a Gratitude List - Each day find one thing you are grateful for. It doesn't have to be anything monumental. It can be something simple like noticing a beautiful sunset. Write one thing down every day and start the next day reading the entire list.
Self-Sooth - There are many things you can do that release endorphins and make you feel good. Some examples include listening to uplifting music, watching a comedy, reading a book you enjoy, and petting an animal. Anything that makes you feel happy normally can be a benefit when you are feeling down.

All these are psychological mechanisms embedded by evolution in our brains. We are predisposed to negative thinking, because this is how we protect ourselves, by anticipating bad scenarios and exercising attitudes for when the bad strikes.

It's an evolutionary remaining of our becoming. Some theories suggest that dreams and especially nightmares are also ways our brains try to elaborate and exercise attitudes for bad scenarios.

Same time, studies showed that depressed people tend to be more realistic actually about their own abilities and generally about life. Optimistic people are sometimes in denial, overestimating themselves and reality.

Some depression is unavoidable at a point. Your goal should not be to avoid pain and depression at all cost, but to learn to tolerate temporary melancholia, to face your fears and heal past traumas.

To learn to identify thinking errors and to replace them with new, more positive attitudes. It will take time and effort, have patience, don't wait overnight results. Depression can be treated. It may involve big changes, but change is welcomed and at a point you have to embrace change and take responsibility for your own happiness.

And you have to master the art of not taking yourself so seriously. A good sense of humor will help you tolerate your blue moods. Same time, depressive episodes can be productive for artistic spirits.

It is well-known that creative people have higher inclinations to depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and overall, inner drama.
