Handling Depression - A Self Help Guide

When you have depression, you want to make sure to reach out to someone. Being alone feeds the misery and only makes the world a darker and more dismal place. Whether you reach out to a friend or to a family member, whether to a professional who can help you, or to someone else, then you can let them help you by helping them know what is going on. Opening up about your feelings and talking about the things that make you feel badly, is one step to ending the endless sensation of depression and misery that seems to consume and overwhelm you. You will be able to take a deep breath of relief and joy at once by feeling a little bit better.

You want to make sure that you share your feelings with people or else you will not have an outlet. You can also figure out how to cheer yourself up by changing up your scene. You might get depressed if you stay indoors and do the same thing all the time. You might be stuck in the house and experiencing stir crazies that make you feel uncertain about your life and your aimless and wayward condition. This might cause you to feel miserable and brokenhearted and all of these things can cause you to feel depressed and despondent.

So, take a break from the norm and take a break from the ordinary and try to go away with friends or see new sights, particularly go to places where it will change your soul, such as islands or mountains or the beach and seascape and that will help you feel better and make you feel even better. You might want to make sure that you hang out with people, see movies, eat out, do things that will make your soul feel lighter and also hang out with people who are positive influences in your life, people who fill your life with happiness and light.

To build your coping skills, find what makes you feel good about you and your life. Resist getting caught up with people's perception of you. Live your life and do what you want. The Brain, Use It or Lose It

The use of psychotropic medications (antidepressants) for stress, depression, and anxiety problems can cause the dependency for stronger medications as the brain loses the ability to produce its own serotonin.

We have all at some point in our life heard the phrase use it or lose it. We can apply it to skills we may have not used for years, and found you partially or totally lost the skill completely.

This old, but true saying applies to our body the same way. Centuries ago, during a more unsanitary time, our gallbladder had a major role in fighting germs and food breakdown. Now, due to proper cooking of foods, the gallbladder has become unused, unneeded, and has deteriorated in size and function.

The human body is very adaptable and has the potential to adapt according to our environment given enough time. Modern times, especially since the industrial revolution, have created something that the human body has found itself incapable of adapting to. The demands of a faster paced society, deadlines, and a state of always being in a hurry have destroyed our body's harmony. Depression, Stress, Anxiety, And Our Inability to Cope

Once considered a taboo subject, now is being discussed more openly due to television talk shows. We have devised several methods to combat this disease of modern times. Barriers are being broken down and more people are openly seeking medical health.

Family physicians have taken the first line of defense by prescribing mild antidepressants all the way to Zanax. These prescriptions are usually written after other stress related health problems have been identified. Psychiatrists and counselors only enter the scene after the family physician has had little or no progress.

Either way treatment focuses on medication, lying on the couch, or both. In a way this is much like taking antacids for a stomach ulcer. It knocks down the acid, but the pain and problems go on.

To properly treat this epidemic proportion health problem of our time, we first need to understand where it originates from. There are many credible Psychiatrists and counselors capable of helping you with identifying your stress or worry triggers.

Identifying these triggers as some would have you believe is your goal, so as to control them. Knowing your stress/worry triggers serve no other point than to assist you with avoiding them.

When you suffer from depression, stress, or anxiety it can be difficult to see the path to good health, or even how to make it through some life issues. The hardest part could be realizing the path you are on. You have to exercise long enough to train your brain to produce adequate levels of serotonin to stabilize your brains natural shield. The stabilization process could take as long as three months of physical activity at a frequency of three times per week. The alternative is to stay on your present course and rely on pharmaceutical treatment.

The down side to pharmaceutical treatments is with time they require higher doses or adjusting to stronger pharmaceuticals. As the body becomes more reliable on pharmaceuticals the body becomes more reliant upon them due to producing less, and less serotonin.

Anatomy of the Broken Heart

Our relationships with others weave the fabric of our existence and constitute the mosaic of our life. In sharing our experience with loved ones, we find warmth, joy, support, companionship and often purpose and direction. Our connectedness with others connects us to the essence of life itself. We have a natural tendency to turn to others to receive information and validation about ourselves. Depending upon the stability and nurturing we received in our childhood, as our knowledge and comprehension of life and our own identity was developing, our dependency on the information and validation we receive from others is more or less pronounced.

The behaviors, actions and reactions of individuals who were loved, nurtured and supported in their childhood vary greatly from the behaviors, actions and reactions of those who were not. As the child begins his journey of discovery of the world and himself, he relies on his parents, family and other authority figures to develop his belief system about his identity, his value and his role in the chemistry of life. The child's mind functions primarily at the subconscious level. As such, he will accept and integrate the information he receives from authority figures as truths. These truths progressively form his belief system and the reference parameters according to which he views himself, his value and moves forward, processing and reacting accordingly to the world around him.

The child raised in a stable, loving and supportive environment develops an underlying foundation made of positive beliefs, a sense of self-worth, balance and inner-strength, which allows him to bounce back from life's challenges more easily. Those raised with the belief they are not good enough, not worthy enough, face the world fractured, carrying a gaping void within, which makes it considerably more challenging to address life's difficulties.

While the loss of a loved one is unquestionably one of the most painful experiences we go through in life, someone whose sense of self-worth was supported during the identity development phase of their life, will proceed through the stages of loss, grief and sadness with a foundation of strength, knowing life goes on and their identity remains unaltered. Usually mothers with post partum depression often are irritable which is why they can get easy angry and upset by even the smallest things. Exhaustion is also very common. Also, they also tend to pull away from their baby. They may even try to ignore their responsibilities as a mother and have someone else take care of their baby. One reason for this is that they get anxious about how well they can do their responsibilities and they are afraid that they will just harm their baby. This can even resort to panic attacks.

Other symptoms for postpartum depression include changes in appetite, sleep pattern disturbances, low libido, and fatigue. A confirmatory sign is an unexplainable constant feeling of sadness or guilt.

If you do have postpartum blues, there are several ways to combat it, so don't worry. The first thing to do is to take care of yourself and you should start with getting enough rest and sleep. Lack of quality rest can lead to irritability and fatigue. Another way to combat postpartum depression is to express your feelings. It will help give you peace of mind and help lessen the stress and anxiety you feel. Talking to someone about may seem very basic, but it really does help. Sometimes all you really need is someone to be there for you. Try talking to someone you can easily relate with, or someone that has also been through the baby blues. If you have a therapist, then you can talk to him as well. While medications are also available for treating postpartum depression, most physicians will tell you that regular counselling is still the most effective treatment for helping women cope with their depression.

If counselling doesn't work, antidepressants are prescribed to help new mothers overcome postpartum depression. Other doctors also prescribe psychotherapy such as the Emotional Freedom Technique which uses both psychology and acupuncture.

If you are pregnant and are worried about postpartum depression, don't be. There are several ways of combating it. Another good thing is that not all pregnancies will result to it. Not all mothers will experience it, and even if you get it when you deliver your first baby, it doesn't mean that you will also experience it on your next pregnancy. Postpartum depression is easily treatable, so get treated as early as you can. Don't wait until it gets out of control before you start doing something about it.

Christians and Depression

Christians are Christlike, they try to understand what the bible standards are, what God requires from them and then structure their principles and standards of life by it just like Jesus Christ did when he was on earth. Christians sacrifice their time and some of the temporary pleasures of this world to serve God well, and it is understandable to wonder why after such effort and sacrifice will God allow a Christian to suffer from depression, such a terrible illness? Some people have turned away from God as a result, and even some of the ones who are still Christians get ridiculed sometimes for claiming to serve God but still suffering from depression. It makes even the strongest in the faith sometimes wonder where is God? Why does he permit so much suffering on his children?

Being a Christian doesn't exempt one from the suffering and pain experienced in the world. The bible never said Christians will be exempted from suffering. In fact as Christians we should not be surprised when bad things happen because Jesus Christ who we try to imitate were persecuted, he suffered and went through pain for doing nothing wrong, talk more of we who are sinners. Moreover as readers of the bible we were already forewarned of the many bad things that will happen as 'signs of the last days' Luke 21:11. The suffering that befall a Christian or even a non Christian is not God's fault, rather they happen for one of three reasons.

Many of the sufferings that befall us humans is caused by us, by actions such as fighting during war that leads to death, crimes that lead to life in prison or sins passed upon children, polluting environments that leads to diseases and natural disaster, greed that lead to imprisonment and death, harmful health habits that can cause various defects and health conditions.

Christians who live their lives according to God's standard are protected from some of these self inflicted pain and Christians who don't are not immune to the consequences of what they do. Galatians 6:7 says: "Do not be misled: God is not to be mocked, for whatever a man is sowing he will also reap". Obeying God's guidelines protects Christians from many calamities, proverbs 1:30-33. But unfortunately not all calamities, Christians sometimes suffer misfortune as a result of other people's mistake, such as environmental pollution and even factors that are not within anyone's control such as hereditary factors.

The bible discloses that much suffering is because of the influence of wicked spirits. the suffering for which so many people blame God does not come from him at all, Revelation 12:12.

Unforeseen Occurrence

Time and unforeseen occurrence also have a bearing to what happens to us. Something bad happening to you not because you were targeted by the devil, or any of your fault but because by chance you were at a place at the wrong time.

Can my Depression be Punishment from God over something I did?

Most of the people who violate godly standards do experience bad effects and sometimes it happens quickly. But does this mean they are being punished by God for the sin they committed? If that were true, what about Jesus Christ who never did wrong but was cruelly mistreated and put to death? And what about Job who lost his possessions and was afflicted with loathsome disease, was God punishing him too?

No. The bible helps us to understand that a time will come when people will be judged according to their deeds, but for now, prosperity should not be viewed as proof of God's blessing nor should adversity be considered proof of his disapproval. Proverbs 2:21,22

Should a true Christian suffer from Depression?

Depression is caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. But your lifestyle choices, relationships and coping skills matters more than genetics. If this is the case, one would expect a Christian to have more hold on depression since he or she is living a life according to bible's standards which allows him or her to have a happy life, one free from life's unnecessary worries and gives them the strength beyond what is normal to cope with life's challenges. And a Christian knows better to face matters head on than to take it personal and let emotions control him or her. But we're imperfect humans, no matter how we try to live our lives according to bible's standards, and fight life's struggles without getting emotional, sometimes we fall short and give into our emotions, but that is okay. You just need to be able to pull yourself up each time you fall short.

Can my Faith in God help me overcome my Depression?

The answer is yes and no, which one will apply to you depends on how you regard faith. Do you simply have faith that God will somehow pull you through your depression without making effort to see that you overcome your depression? If that is the case then, no, your faith can't cure your depression.

But have you been diagnosed to have depression, and you've started taking the treatment you need to get better and making other extra effort and counting on God to bless your treatment and your efforts so that you can get better? Then yes, your faith will help you overcome depression.

The bible in James 2:17 clearly states: "Faith, if it does not have works is dead in itself."

To illustrate: A young man may court a young lady, telling her that he loves her. But if he never asks her to marry him, is he really demonstrating that his love is thorough? Likewise works or actions are a means of demonstrating the genuineness of our faith and our love.

How to Avoid much Suffering

God does not just leave us by ourselves without a guide. He provided us with the very best counsel on living through the bible, which when applied fills our lives with meaning, results in a happy family life, brings us into close association with people who really love one another and safeguards us against practices that can bring us much needless physical suffering.

As a Christian learn to face your problems head on. Don't take it so personal that you become depressed. There are different ways different people are suffering today, if yours is depression, then quickly reach out to qualified people who can help and start dealing with it. Don't let it linger while you ask yourself why me. Asking the wrong questions doesn't help you, so get the help you need and pray to God to bless your treatment and your efforts to get well.

Draw strength from the many examples in the bible of Christians who faced many problems but were able to cope. Learn how they did it and apply it in your case.

Seek support from a mature Christian member, someone you can confide in and that can help you cope with your illness. A problem shared is half solved, and two good heads are better than one.

Should a Christian take antidepressant?

Of course, if your type of depression requires it. God has allowed mankind to learn about many medical tools that can greatly help people suffering from different health issues. It will be foolish not to avail one's self to them. Remember, you need to give God something to bless. A person who is sick and doesn't take the drug that is required to get well, is like a person who wakes up every morning and prays to God for a better life and then sits down all day doing nothing, even if that person prays for the next 50 years, without taking steps to create that better life, his situation will remain the same.

People who are suffering from mild to severe depression are often recommended psychotherapy or antidepressant, or both. So that depending on your mood, you can just pick the list appropriate at that time and let it play and carry you away from where you are, and your problems.

How You Can Trick Yourself Out of Depression Quickly

You are feeling like a frozen chook, motionless and lifeless. Your feet feel like slabs of concrete, and it is very dark down that deep hole. Someone speaks to you, and you tremble in fear, and even worse, they ask you to do something. "Smile and be positive" are meaningless statements, when you are simply not feeling happy, and that is really why you can not lift yourself quickly. Imagine it as happening now, so you can conjure up some happy emotions. Then store it in your deep memory, and recall it whenever you feel down. Your deep memory does not distinguish between fantasy and reality, so it is a useful resource, to recall happy events.

Once you have temporarily, but quickly, pleased that inner child, so to speak, then you may feel positive enough to try other things. This may be a tricky way to rebalance your feelings, but it lets you control your thoughts and emotions towards a positive outcome.

Depression is increasingly common, and a growing number of people in the Western world are taking anti-depressant medication. Many herbs and supplements offer natural help for depression, but how do you know which ones are effective and safe?

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Good nutrition is important when you are suffering from any illness and there are some nutrients that are especially important for depressed people. Omega-3 fatty acids are so-called "healthy fats" that the body uses for many functions, including maintaining the nervous system.

Many studies also connect them with mood and emotional health. Omega-3 can be found in oily fish, some seeds and nuts, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil. It is also available in supplement form.

Many therapies can be used as self help for depression and they can often complement medical care. Many of them are safe to use even if you are taking prescription anti-depressants. These complementary therapies are not intended to replace medical care, but are safe to use to relieve symptoms in depressed people.

A Holistic Approach to Depression and Anxiety

If you have depression and/or anxiety, in addition to conventional medical treatment, consider major changes to your diet and vitamin, trace mineral and herbal supplements. You may have vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Avoid processed, packaged and junk foods. Processed, packaged and junk foods are filled with sugar (primarily high fructose corn syrup), chemicals and toxins. They do not have much fiber or nutrients in them. Avoid soda and artificial fruit drinks. Soda and artificial fruit drinks contain a lot of sugar and toxins that can damage the brain. Also, artificial sweeteners in processed foods and drinks contain chemical sweeteners that are toxic to the brain.

We are bombarding our brains with toxins in our food. At the same time, we are starving our brains of nutrients (vitamins and minerals) because of the food we eat and the beverages we drink. Our energy is being drained by these foods and drinks.

For healthy brains, we need a lot of nutrients (vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants). We need to hydrate ourselves with pure, filtered water (not soda and artificial fruit drinks). This is achieved through a high nutrient diet and through large doses of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. A high nutrient diet primarily consists of fresh, non-starchy vegetables, some starchy vegetables and some fruit, berries, nuts and seeds) and some whole grains. Fresh vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts and seeds and whole grains have the fiber our bodies need as well. Some protein is fine, but should be limited. At least 80% of your diet should consist of vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts and seeds. You can get protein from beans, legumes, eggs, fish and lean meat. But, limit your intake of protein and red meat. For starch, eat whole grains, whole potatoes and whole yams along with whole grain pasta, because they contain nutrients.

Fresh, whole, organic vegetables are best because they contain the maximum amount of nutrients in them. They contain the minimum amount of toxins in them. But, fresh non-organic whole vegetables and whole (non-processed) frozen vegetables are better than processed, packaged and junk foods. Avoid genetically modified foods.

Substantially reduce refined sugar and starch in your diet (such as white bread, white rice, white pasta and chips). Substantially reduce fat in your diet - especially poly unsaturated and hydrogenated fats such as vegetable, corn and safflower oil and margarine. Use natural fats such as olive oil and butter. But, go light on olive oil and dairy products such as butter and cheese because they have a high caloric content.

A raw diet is best. Raw, fresh vegetables, fruit, berries, nuts and seeds contain the most nutrients. But, if you wish to cook your food, lightly cook it. This will preserve many of the nutrients in them. Steam them lightly. Boil, bake and grill them lightly. Limit your consumption of processed sauces and condiments. They contain a lot of high fructose corn syrup, salt and toxins.

Some of the best vegetables with a lot of vitamins and minerals in them include green leafy vegetables (such as spinach and kale), broccoli, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, asparagus, avocados, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, string beans, lima beans, peppers, artichokes and root vegetables (such as beets, parsnips and turnips). Eat plenty of garlic and onions. Eat berries especially blueberries and strawberries. Eat fruit, especially apples, bananas, grapes, peaches, plums, pears and melons. Super foods such as pomegranates and acai and goji berries are also good. Eat nuts. Almonds and walnuts are especially healthful. Seeds are very healthy too.

Supplement your high nutrient diet with vitamins, minerals and other supplements. A multi-vitamin is good, but it not enough to give you the vitamins and minerals you need for good health even if you are on a high nutrient diet. This is because the nutritional value of fresh and frozen vegetables, fruits and berries has been depleted. This is due to depletion of nutrients in the soil.

So, on a daily basis, take a multi vitamin, but fortify it with additional vitamins and supplements including vitamin A, B-Complex (B-6 and B-12 and Folic Acid and Niacin especially), C, D (D3 especially), E and K Take trace minerals daily. You can get trace minerals in liquid form. Some of the essential trace minerals include iron, zinc, manganese, potassium, magnesium, copper, iodine, selenium, molybdenum, chromium, calcium, sulfur, cobalt, nickel, boron, beryllium, sodium, copper, tin, silicon, vanadium, fluorine. Get lots of sunshine on your face, forehead and arms.

Also, on a daily basis, take (i) Antioxidants (CoQ10, green tea and green tea extract and Resveratrol are good), (ii) Adatogens (such as cordyceps, reishi and shitaki mushrooms), Asrtalagus and Tumeric (Curcurim), (iii) anti inflammatory supplements such as fish oil and (iv) protein/amino acid supplements. When your energy is low, take Echinacea and Aasian Ginseng, Astalagus and Asian Mushrooms and Asian Mushroom supplements (i..e, reishi, cordyceps and shitaki mushrooms). When you feel anxious, take Holy Basil and Kava Kava. When you feel depressed, take St. John's Wort.

Vitamin B-12, D, Co-Q 10 and Astralagus are especially important for depression and anxiety

Drink plenty of water. Some prescribe at least eight, eight ounce glasses of water per day. Filter your water, because tap water contains chemicals. Get plenty of exercise. At the very least, walk two to three miles a day. When you are sitting for long periods, stretch your legs and body and get up and move around or exercise. Breathe more deeply and take a lot more deep breaths to draw the maximum amount of oxygen into your lungs.

To maximize absorption of nutrients, it is important to be in a relaxed and balanced state. This will require you to manage stress, center yourself and purge anger, fear and negativity, while living in the moment and controlling negative thoughts. What Are the Symptoms to Be Watched for to Determine If You Are Suffering From Depression?

"I'm depressed." Does this statement sound familiar to you?

The word "depressed" became the generic term used by people in the society referring to their feelings when they are upset or sad. However, the symptoms of depression are more serious than merely feeling blue. In fact, depression can intensely impair the daily functions of an individual affecting the physical, emotional and mental aspect of the person. Worst of all, depression is indeed fatal.

The following questions may serve as guide to determine whether you are really suffering from depression. An affirmative answer to every question is equivalent to one positive symptom of depression.

Have you unintentionally lose or gain at least 5% of your weight?

A depressed individual may experience alteration in his/her eating pattern. The person may immensely lose appetite. Thus, a sudden decrease in his/her body weight would be evident. Otherwise, a depressed person may overeat as well. Overeating becomes his/her coping mechanism towards stressful situations.

Are you experiencing insomnia or hypersomnia?

Difficulty of sleeping or insomnia is one of the symptoms of depression. Usually, a depressed person over thinks about the stressful situation or event, keeping him/her awake throughout sleeping hours. On the other hand, depression might also make the person over sleep during waking hours. This serves as the person's escape from facing the distress he/she is experiencing.

Are you always feeling tired or fatigued?

People suffering from depression always feel tired or fatigued in any activities including those which they previously enjoy. They have lack of motivation or energy to socialize and even perform their favourite leisure pursuit.

Are you feeling worthless or excessively guilty about something?

Depressed persons generally feel that they are insignificant to others. They feel worthless and useless. They feel guilty about all the misfortunes in life they are experiencing. They keep on blaming themselves for everything.

Are you having difficulty concentrating, making decisions or remembering details?

Depression usually makes a person preoccupied with the distressing situation. As a result, the person would experience impairment in decision-making and remembering details. In like manner, a depressed person loses focus on whatever he/she does.

Are you having suicidal thoughts?

Having suicidal thoughts is the most dangerous aspect of depression. If this symptom would not be cleared out from the system of the depressed person, there is a very high percentage that the person might end up committing suicide.

If your answer is yes to at least more than one of the questions above, you might really be experiencing depression. To top it all, you must be suffering from the symptoms about two weeks or more to confirm that you are really depressed.
