You are feeling like a frozen chook, motionless and lifeless. Your feet feel like slabs of concrete, and it is very dark down that deep hole. Someone speaks to you, and you tremble in fear, and even worse, they ask you to do something. "Smile and be positive" are meaningless statements, when you are simply not feeling happy, and that is really why you can not lift yourself quickly. There is a simple, quick, and effective way to lift yourself out of that hole.
Not feeling happy is the bottom line. We are not talking about why you are feeling down, or what treatments or resources are available to help you. If a very young child is sad, and you buy them a favourite toy, they will rejoice and be instantly happy.
A similar principle works for adults, and it is free, you do not have to buy anything. Usually, though, we are offered plentiful advice, practical activities, and professional help. This is great, when you are able to accept it. The very first thought in your head is about how low you feel, and you are just not up to following instructions. It is a little like asking someone whose car is stuck in the mud, to give you a lift to town. They are more concerned about their predicament, and not listening to what you want them to do.
When feeling depressed, you are always conscious of your feelings first, and it can paralyse you enough to not be able to respond to anything. Your body is unbalanced, and the first priority should be to try and get it balanced again as soon as possible. If you have a cut that is bleeding, you attend to it quickly. If you are emotionally going downhill, you should also attend to it quickly, before you get emotionally hemorrhaged.
We suggest that the quickest, free, and most effective first aid, that you can apply for depression, is to make your inner child happy. You do not need a toy, or any physical item, because that would involve cost and doing something. All you have to do, is to imagine something that will make you instantly feel happy.
Imagine something that happened in the past, or even something imaginary, that you would like to happen. As long as it is something that really makes you happy, visualise it in as much detail as possible, of everything you see, smell, hear, and feel. Imagine it as happening now, so you can conjure up some happy emotions. Then store it in your deep memory, and recall it whenever you feel down. Your deep memory does not distinguish between fantasy and reality, so it is a useful resource, to recall happy events.
Once you have temporarily, but quickly, pleased that inner child, so to speak, then you may feel positive enough to try other things. This may be a tricky way to rebalance your feelings, but it lets you control your thoughts and emotions towards a positive outcome.
